Westie Gus needed to come into rescue due to his fighting with his siblings. He is 7 months old. castrated etc. Gus is in foster with Sean, in Beckenham, near Bromley.
Update from Sean 25.03.26
Gus has been with us for nearly a week. He is a sweet boy who has some issues.
When we are out Gus in on a secure harness. He is very agressive towards any male dogs he sees, no matter how big/small they are. With female dogs we have had mixed behaviour. When he is being agressive no matter how much you try and sistract him he keeps snarling, barking and snapping until the other dog has disappeared from sight.
We have tried him on a long lead, and recall is okay, so long as you are rattling the treat tin. He has twice snapped at children. He doesn’t like joggers or tall men in dark clothing.
Gus is a quarter Schnauzer and he has long powerful legs. This makes him very strong on the lead.
At home, he isn’t completely house-trained, although he is trying. He had a couple of run-ins with our female Westie when he first arrived, and we have had to feed her separately, or Gus will fight to get at her food. They get on well so long as food isn’t involved. He will find a quiet corner and settle down if you are in the room, loves a pile of cushions in front of the TV, rather than a basket.
Gus is very food focused, when we are cooking we are aware he is there all the time. He isn’t above helping himself! If you leave something on the dining table, remember to push the chairs in or Gus will pop up and help himself!, if you are on the sofa he will pop up beside you and make a grab of what you have!
I think that, currently, Gus would be best placed as an ‘only’ dog, or with a strong female dog. I don’t think he should be with young children.
As we are finding out some thing new every day, as Gus settles, it is hard to form an opinion yet. We will let Mo know if thigs change.
Note from Mo
Thank you Sean for fostering Gus, you are doing so well with him, Thank you. We do not rehome where their are young children, as over the years we have had a number of Westies needing to come into rescue due to young children teasing and pulling the dog around.
